As it stands from the information I gathered, it is a joint product of Akihabara expert Ruki Akiba together with ULTRA-PRISM vocalist Usagi Tsukimiya. I can only assume Masaya Koike was part of its production, as well. All in all, a very catchy, very fun song. Unfortunately, I did not understand the rendition of "Akihabaland" in the original lyrics as appearing in the clip, but I hope the same feelings were conveyed regardless - nothing but sheer moe overload.

Lyrics - 真夜中の電波 (Mayonaka no Denpa) by まにきゅあ団

This peculiar song was included as an unnamed extra song in the same album as the last lyrics post, ラジヲまにきゅあ1374KHz released in 1994. It was remastered in the 2000 album どきどき♥メモリアル as 真夜中の電波, or "Midnight Radio Waves".  I was originally interested in the portrayal of "denpa" from before the term was popularized by the visual novel Shizuku, and certainly long before it was used to describe music. Later on I was also drawn by the excerpts of speech scattered throughout the song. Unfortunately, as there are no official lyrics, I transcribed the words from sound (with a fair bit of help since my Japanese isn't that good), so there might be mistakes in the transcription itself regardless of the translation. I hope that despite that, the radio waves of old will still reach out to you.

Lyrics - ジャングルジムから降りられない (Jungle Gym kara Orirarenai) by まにきゅあ団

From ラジヲまにきゅあ1374KHz of 1994, "Can't get off the jungle gym". As can be seen here, this song was later covered with Aki Hata in ANAKREON's album 泡沫～うたかた～, rendered slower and having a more serious feeling. I see the song as another proof of Ikuko Ebata's amazing talent, not only as a vocalist but as a lyricist. Weaving such childish and vain emotions into a serious and touching romantic song is no mere feat. To be able to peek into the heart of a young maiden in love, is this not the true meaning of moe? Unfortunately there was no such consensus among my friends, some of whom viewed it as slightly disorganized and unfinished. Others also associated Shinji Hosoe's composition with 80s disco and older anime opening themes.  What do you think?

CD Showcase - junk.test SUN by mplayers RECORD (1996)

A large part of chasing after the fleeting history of doujin music is simply collecting older CDs before all available and functioning copies disappear. This means regularly searching for them, wherever they might appear. With CDs concerning the founding of doujin music, it's critical - so when a new result for junk.test appeared, I knew I had to hunt it down.

This album, as its name may suggest, is the third in the "junk.test" line of albums. They feature both vocal and instrumental tracks, but unlike other artists of the period, their sound feels less influenced by game music nor electronic music in general. However, we must not forget that as with all early doujin music, there is always a degree of involvement in otaku culture. The circle mplayers RECORD (music players) was formed from the music writing sig (special interest group, akin to a forum) of BBS ASCII-NET. Although the circle was only formed in 1994, it seems the core members were around as early as 1989. To what extent their activities were at this point in time, I cannot tell. Founder Bukkon put up several of the circle's works in a YouTube playlist, including one peculiar song - "SOMEDAY" from 1988 performed by DECO軽音楽部. Perhaps we'll learn in the future of them. For now, we have "junk.test".

I've recently been captured by the sound of this Manikyua-Dan song, and wondered what sort of meaning laid behind the words. Now that the lyrics are translated, you too can enjoy this heartbreaking tale from the kingdom of machines - 機械の王国 (Kikai no Oukoku) by まにきゅあ団, released in December 1993. It was performed several times live and rerecorded in 1997. More than a decade later, it would receive a vocaloid cover by none other than Masaki Sahara, a doujin musician of the mid-late 90s who a member of mplayers RECORD.
